Retirement Home vs Assisted Living vs Long-Term Care

November 2, 2022

There are different levels of care available to the BC senior community. Some are government subsidized, others are private. Some have waiting lists, while others do not. It can be confusing when you’re trying to navigate through all the different options available.

Many retirement homes have different levels of care so you can age in place, starting from independent living all the way to long-term care. To help you make your decision, contact the facilities, and ask for a tour. See the attached link for facilities available in Langley: https://www.kellyblouin.ca/langley-senior-home-directory/

Retirement Homes (Independent Living)– This is suitable for seniors who are generally pretty active and healthy. Often called “resort style living”, retirement communities have many optional amenities. Typically, there are food options available, laundry service, housekeeping, transportation, etc. It’s basically living on your own with convenient benefits.

Assisted Living – This is suitable for seniors who can still live independently but need help with everyday non-medical tasks such as bathing and getting dressed. They are still required to get in and out of bed unassisted and perform basic hygiene for themselves.

Long-Term Care – This is suitable for seniors who can no longer care for themselves. There is government-funded long-term care, but often there is a waiting list. Private long-term care is also available at a cost, but it typically can be accessed right away. Health care is available 24/7.

Respite Care – When a caregiver at home is not available to take care of the elder for a short period of time, some places offer respite care (short stays with 24/7 health care). This is an option for caregivers who go on vacation or possibly need a break.

Memory Care – These are safe and secure long-term care facilities that take care of people with dementia and memory-related health issues.
